Long-haired breeds with short hair?

I am looking into buying either a shitsu, maltese, or yorkshire terrier. I know that they are usually known to grow their hair long. could you just keep the dog's hair at the length is was as a puppy? would that mean going to the groomers more often?

Yes you absolutely can keep the dog's hair shorter. The majority of the owners that bring their toy breeds into our salon have their hair kept short. You would want to see a groomer every 6-8 weeks to have it maintained. But if it's hair were longer, you'd have more work at home keeping it tangle and mat-free.

If you're unable or unwilling to do this, I'd consider looking into a short-haired breed dog.

Yes -- and many pet owners in our area do this. It would definitely mean going to the groomer or learning to groom yourself -- which isn't all that hard.

Yes...I have a yorkie and he gets the puppy cut because he gets matted easily. It doesn't nessecarily mean going to the groomer more ofter, with a yorkie you are supposed to go every month and a half to two months. Yorkies are still adorable with the puppy cut.

yes but the breed has the long hair for a reason. but if a person wanted a dog with short hair for a long hair breed it might not look all that right

yes, you would need to go to the groomers alot. but some dogs (of those kinds!) don't get that long of hair! it all depends!

GET A MALTESE!!!! I have one and they are the best dogs ever. I keep the hair short by taking him to the groomers. They are so playful, and yet nice and calm when you want to cuddle. I strongly reccomend them, they barely take any work. Good luck!!

No experience with the smaller breeds but I keep my Olde English Sheepdog's hair fairly short http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s223/...

Its easier to maintain, than keeping long hair brushed and untangled.
